We are delighted that Cockermouth School will be represented in both competitions of the inaugural Barclay’s Knight-Stokes Cup.

Named after two of England’s greatest state-educated cricketers (including Cockermouth’s very own Ben Stokes) this is a new national hardball cricket competition exclusively for state schools across the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

All state schools can enter a boys’ and girls’ under-15s team, with winners progressing to regional and then national knockout matches, before the finalists play at Lord’s next summer.

We have received some media attention this week to celebrate the competitions launch, with a visit from BBC Radio Cumbria’s Hannah Mitchell.

Hannah spoke to members of both of our sides, as well as Headteacher, Richard King.  To read more about Hannah’s visit click here.

It is fantastic to see our students competing in this competition, as it aims to broaden the appeal of the sport and offer an equal platform for boys and girls cricketers to shine.

Our budding cricketers know that they can aspire to get to the very top of the game, as the England cricket captain has demonstrated what is possible.

It is exciting to think that through backing this tournament, Ben Stokes is helping to provide the next generation with increased opportunities and may be helping to find our next sporting superstar.
