Our whole school Sports Day took place on Thursday 3rd July 2025. This event is designed as a mass participation celebration, encouraging as many students as possible to take part. Students from Years 7 to 10 competed in a range of traditional track and field athletics events.

This format of Sports Day has been a proud tradition at Cockermouth School since the summer of 1985, and over the years, approximately 8,000 students have had the opportunity to participate. Given this rich history, for a student to challenge or break a school record is a significant achievement.

This year, the event was made more demanding due to unpredictable weather and difficult track conditions, making record-breaking performances even more impressive. Despite these challenges, two new school records were set:

  • Congratulations to Alice M (Year 7) who set a new record of 31.60m in the Year 7 Girls' Javelin. The previous record of 20.30m was held by Rachel G since 2013. Alice is certainly a rising star in athletics, currently ranked No. 1 in the UK for Javelin and No. 3 for Discus.
  • Congratulations to Alistair S (Year 10) who set a new record of 74.40m in the Year 10 Boys' Rounders Ball Throw. Although this is a relatively new Sports Day event, first introduced in 2022, Alistair’s impressive throw sets a benchmark that could stand for years to come. The previous record of 67.70m was set just last year (2024) by Archie C.

The highlight of the day was seeing the entire school community come together to celebrate sport and participation. From students giving their all in both track and field events, to staff supporting, encouraging, marshalling, recording results, and overseeing the day’s running, none of it would be possible without the dedicated efforts of the PE department.

Many hours of preparation go into ensuring the necessary resources, clear instructions, and lessons all build towards a smooth and successful event. A special thank you goes to Miss Havard and Mr Charters for their outstanding organisation and leadership in bringing the day together.

The attitude and behaviour of all students throughout the day were exemplary. Well done to everyone who contributed to making this another memorable and successful Cockermouth School Sports Day!
