Maths

  • Additional teaching groups in years 9 to 11 resulting in smaller class sizes.
  • All maths rooms equipped with Interactive Whiteboards and PCs. Teachers use up-to-date maths software in the delivery of their lessons to help students understanding.
  • Organise and host annual sixth form maths conference for year 12 students across North and West Cumbria. The conference aims to help students prepare for their AS exams, encourage students to consider a maths related course at university and to broaden their awareness of the place of maths in the world of work.
  • Provide opportunities for Gifted and Talented students at Cockermouth School to take part in additional events which stretch the students beyond the national curriculum. As an example, year 7 and 8 students develop their understanding of the world of binary in a Maths, ICT and Design Technology cross-curricular project.
  • Regular contact with Gifted and Talented students across our feeder primary schools to develop and build on the pupil’s enthusiasm for maths through rich and engaging tasks.
  • Organise enrichment events for students across our community. Previous visiting speakers have included Johnny Ball.
  • Develop opportunities for older students to act as learning mentors for younger students. As an example, Yr 12 students act as maths buddies helping GCSE students with their revision.
